Hands Across the Border - Consolidation of Lake Ontario 165 & Mexico 135 Chapters - Tabernacle Dedication & Associated Festivities
Companions:
For 44 years the companions of Ottawa Chapter #222, Royal Arch Masons of Canada in Ontario and Mexico Chapter #135 Royal Arch Masons New York have exchanged annual visits. This year the companions and their wives from Ottawa journeied south to visit the newly consolidated Lake Ontario #165 Chapter in Oswego. As part of the consolidation, a bylaw was added endowing the Hands Across The Border event.
ME Allen Lewis, Grand High Priest, Royal Arch Masons of NY and associate Grand Officers joined our Canadian visitors for a special afternoon and evening. Hosted by E Ed Salm, High Priest of Lake Ontario 165, the Companions witnessed the actual Consolidation Ceremony conducted by the Grand High Priest; the Dedication by the Grand Line of the new Tabernacle in the recently constructed lodge rooms of Lake City Lodge #127, F&AM; and the exalting of 3 companions during the Holy Royal Arch Degree.
Companions from Ottawa were delighted to witness the degree and shared the differences in the rites of the two Grand Chapters. Two of the visitors had just been exalted the previous week and enjoyed observing the well performed ritual.
Lake Ontario Companion James Rizzo described the day's events:
The combining of our Chapter with Mexico's, along with the Dedication of the Tabernacle, all coinciding with our Hands Across the Border program rolled into one event plus the ritual work, highlighted by The Holy Royal Arch Degree, so wonderfully presented by Comp. RE John Fuller's degree team all came together to provide our visiting Canadian Companions (and their wives for the public portion) with a wonderful example of Capitular Masonry in New York at it's best, not to mention Masonic Fellowship at its best.
The dedication of the Tabernacle was one of the most beautiful of ceremonies, rich in symbolism, and the Grand Line was there doing an 'above and beyond job'.
The end of the evening was capped off with an amazing entertainer, an Elvis impersonator who was such a showman & had such great audience rapport that he had many couples dancing to his performance. Capitular Masonry is alive and well in Oswego!
My thanks to all I have mentioned and to those I may have inadvertently forgotten, but especially to our own Excellent High Priest, Comp.Ed Salm and his wife Tammy.
Grand Honors!
Next October, Ottawa Chapter will be hosting a delegation from New York and all Companions are welcome to join us. It will be a 45th anniversary trip worthy of continued friendship and brotherly love.

Thomas Smith Webb Chapter of Research No.1798 held its annual convocation in Albany during Grand Chapter. About 35 companions gathered to receive scholarly papers and discuss issues related to Royal Arch Masonry. RE Piers Vaughan discussed the concept of circumambulations in Masonry. ME John Jones related some interesting background on the Chapter’s namesake, Thomas Smith Webb. RE Bill Vassily made some comparative observations of essential common aspects of opening and closing ceremonies of lodges, chapters and councils. Finally, RE Harvey Payne shed some interesting historical background on Eagle Lodge 169 from the early 1800’s.
The Chapter elected RE Ken Fischer to succeed RE Jeff Williamson as High Priest, who was installed with his other officers. In addition, the Chapter received a gift from Dansville Chapter of its Great Lights. Dansville has merged with Steuben Chapter.
Thomas Smith Webb Chapter is the first Royal Arch Chapter to be solely devoted to Royal Arch research and scholarship. The purpose of the Chapter is to encourage Royal Arch Masonic research and study by its members and others, to present findings and conclusions to the Chapter for discussion and interchange of judgment, to sponsor discussion and debate topics pertaining to Royal Arch Masonry.
